Psalm 121: Where Does My Help Come From? (SLRP Devo)

Mountains are symbols of strength and stability, images of the God we worship and serve. Strong and stable, it is God who keeps us both day and night, when we come and when we go.

Scripture

Psalm 121
A song for the ascents

1 I raise my eyes to the mountains:
from where does my help come?

2 My help comes from Yahweh,
maker of heaven and earth.

3 He doesn't give your foot to slipping;
your keeper doesn't doze.

4 There, he doesn't doze and he doesn't sleep,
Yisrael's keeper.

5 Yahweh is your keeper, Yahweh is your shade,
at your right hand.

6 By day the sun will not strike you down,
or the moon by night.

7 Yahweh will keep you from everything bad;
he will keep your life.

8 Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in,
from now and permanently.

[Psalm 121, The Bible For Everyone (bold and italics mine)]

"Yahweh" is often translated as "LORD" in modern translations. "LORD" (all caps) refers to God while "Lord" or "lord" is the generic, non-divine, use of the word (think Downton Abby or other such show where people are referred to as "lord")

Lyric

"Praise You In the Storm" by Casting Crowns

And I'll praise you in this storm
And I will lift my hands
That you are who you are
No matter where I am
And every tear I've cried
You hold in your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise you in this storm

Reflection

I raise my eyes up to the mountains...

As we journey through life we will certainly come upon treacherous mountain passes that requires extraordinary effort to traverse, not to mention the dangers that lurk in the remote wilderness – thieves, wild beasts, and broken-down vehicles.

I raise my eyes up to the mountains...

Pilgrims on their way to the holy city would lift their eyes to Jerusalem, the city on the hill, in which the temple of God stood tall and strong. Yahweh was not a sleeping god, unaware of the prayers of God's people. No, Yahweh hears and provides cool shade for those in need.

I raise my eyes up to the mountains...

Mountains are symbols of strength and stability, images of the God we worship and serve. Strong and stable, it is God who keeps us both day and night, when we come and when we go.

My help comes from Yahweh, maker of heaven and earth.

Prayer

Father above, who holds and keeps me.
Savior Jesus, who rescues and saves me.
Holy Spirit, who walks with me.

When mountains of life loom ahead, remind me to lift my eyes even higher – to you! My help comes from you, the One who created all things and all people, and desire all people to come to you.

Thank you for your shade, protection, and for hearing my heart as I cry out to you in my time of need. I put my trust fully in you.

Thank you. This prayer I lift up in Jesus' name. Amen.
